A Circuit Court in Kumasi has granted bail to a 26-year old man who allegedly assaulted his three-year old son for bed-wetting and destroying his phone.
The court presided over by Patricia Amponsah granted the suspect, Ebenezer Osei Bonsu bail of GH₵50,000 with three sureties.
Confirming the issue to Accra based Citi FM, Samuel Koduah, counsel for the suspect said the bail was in the right direction since the Supreme Court has made definite pronouncements about granting of bail in this Covid-19 era.
Bonsu is alleged to have used a cable and a cane to whip the child, causing injuries to his head and back.
The Manhyia Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Kwaku Buah, confirmed that the suspect was arrested over the weekend following a complaint by the child’s mother, Barbara Obeng.
The police also confirmed that Barbara and Bonsu had the child when they were lovers, even though they were no longer together, Bonsu who works in Accra took custody of the child whenever he went to Kumasi to visit.
He added that it was during one of those visits that Bonsu refused to return the child to the mother after taking custody of him.
Barbara in turn reported to the police who went to pick the child and realised that he had cuts and swellings on his body
The suspect is to reappear in court on May 21, 2020.
