The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is worried about the increasing number of COVID-19 infections in the metropolis in recent times.
The assembly blames the upsurge in the number of infections on the complete disregard for all the safety protocol and hygiene etiquette by the residents.
A statement issued by the assembly yesterday and signed by the public relations officer (PRO), Miss Henrietta A. Konadu Aboagye, said health facilities in the metropolis had recorded over 200 infection cases with 10 mortalities from July 1 to July 13th, this year, at different treatment centres.
The statement said the new cases of “the Delta variant in the metropolis were detected soon after the Christmas festivities in December 2020.”
Causes
According to the KMA, the upsurge in the cases in the metropolis had been mainly attributed to the general disregard for the COVID-19 safety protocol, especially at funerals, parties and other social gatherings.
Accordingly, the assembly urged operators of lorry stations, transports, markets and other public and private entities to ensure that the safety protocol was enforced within their jurisdictions.
It reminded the public to continue to adhere to all the COVID-19 safety protocol, including the washing of hands with soap under running water, the wearing of face masks in public places, avoiding hand shaking and social distancing.
KNUST
In a related development, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has also issued a statement urging registrars of the all colleges of the university to ensure strict adherence to the COVID-19 safety protocols on campus.
This, according to the management of the university, was as a result of “an astronomical upsurge in the spread of the COVID-19 on KNUST campus.”
Dated July 19, 2021, the statement signed by the Deputy Registrar, Mr Daniel Kumi-Djan, directed that all Veronica buckets were to be filled and used constantly, while the use of hand sanitizer and the wearing of face masks were to be strictly enforced.
